It is my last couple of days here in China. I have loved every bit of it! I was able to catch up with some old friends from India and make some new ones. Coaching the Train the Trainers (TTT) was a blast and going to the schools and overseeing how they implemented the program while running a practice with the kids was indescribable. Amid this great opportunity, God opened a door. A door that I have been trying to kick in for many years. Have you ever been pulling on a door trying to open it and it won’t open, so you keep pulling hard as you can, jerking it to see if it will open, maybe even getting worried or angry that the door just won’t open. Then right before you are about to go get some dynamite to blow the door open, someone comes up behind you, nonchalantly, scans their key card, pushes the door open and walks through it. Yea, that was me... the one going to get the explosives lol. I used to be so focused on getting that door open until I learned to stop and be patient for God to come with the key and open it for me. Once I stepped back and started living my life focused on being used by God, wherever and whenever He wanted me, everything became so much more simple. And guess what? In His timing, He opened it… Geeezzzz, why couldn’t I stop pulling earlier, it would have been way less exhausting and a whole lot easier. I could have used my time a lot more wisely, especially knowing that the door was going to open regardless.
Recently, I was offered a basketball operations internship with the Milwaukee Bucks. I am officially going to be living in Wisconsin. In being extremely excited to start my new adventure, I am a bit nervous…..of the cold weather lol. I am ready to go to work… in a snowsuit! Has anyone seen the movie, ‘A Christmas Story’ when the little brother puts on the snowsuit and can’t put his arms down…. That’s going to be me. Yikes, get your cameras ready lol. I am ready to work hard, serve people, gain new friends, build new memories and learn the life of wearing layers.

My coaching colleague and I finally wave down a taxi and jump in. We are in China and we don’t speak Chinese and he doesn’t speak English; this is going to be interesting. Thank goodness we downloaded translators on our phones, or else there is no telling where we would have ended up. We show the driver where we want to go, he starts the meter, and we are off. Then all of a sudden, the driver starts talking in full paragraphs to us like we know what he is saying. My colleague and I look at each other with a smirk and began to speak back about every random thing we can think of. This is done with lots of animation and energy and goes on for a couple of dialogues without anyone knowing what anyone else is saying; it was quite humorous. It ends with lots of laughter, pats on the shoulder and smiles.
We have been coaching a program called Train the Trainers with anywhere from 200 to 500 coaches. When walking into a gym where there is a language barrier, it can be a question of, ‘how am I going to teach and speak with everyone for four days with two sessions each?’ Again the translator saves the day, but they don’t always portray the emotion that I’m are trying to get across. There were times that I would say something with lots of enthusiasm while running and jumping and the translator would say it standing still in a monotone voice. I usually busted out laughing when that would happen. Basketball is a universal language, so most people can understand what you are saying with your actions and attempts of informal sign language (and may I say, it’s lots and lots of informal sign language lol). But what makes it all enjoyable is how you speak with the people around you and the interaction. Sometimes words don’t do your actions justice. So when I am coaching, I am constantly moving around smiling, enjoying what I am doing, encouraging those who are with me, having a great time with all and any situation that is dealt. This comes from within. Whatever is in your heart is what spews out of you. Do you have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness? People can see those characteristics that you have and usually mimic the excitement and joy of it. Yes, being collected and professional is something that we should encompass, but don’t forget to be real. These days you always have to be politically correct and articulate in a business fashion, but in all honesty, I say, encompass what is needed for that situation, but don’t get lost in all the jib-jab. Be you, don’t be afraid to let your personality show. It’s all about your attitude and being the light in your own life, so you can be the light in someone else’s and lift them to a place of inspiration and hope. I went downstairs to grab some yogurt for breakfast. As I grabbed it in the container, I was looking for the spoon, and there was no spoon, only straws. So a new place with different ways than my own to eat yogurt. I am totally down. So I stuck a straw in the top and drank it like a smoothie. I think I might adopt this back in the States, less silverware to wash lol. I love trying new ways for me to experience life. Although I will say, chopsticks can be a bit of a struggle, especially when my hand begins to cramp after trying so hard to use them… They won’t get the best of me lol. I did take a break from them and ate some amazing Mexican food the other day. I can neither confirm nor deny that it was actually Taco Tuesday haha…(and for those that need to know, Mexican food is one of my favorites!). Stay Blessed and Uplifted! One day between flights, talk about a quick turn around. I arrived back in Dallas, Texas from working an amazing basketball camp in the Caribbean and was trying to gather my thoughts as I recollected on what has happened this past year. 2019 alone I have lived in India for 4 months, trained athletes in Louisiana for 1 month, went on a mission trip to Montana where I ran the basketball portion and helped work with the horses (my first love) for 2 weeks, participated in the NBA Summer League in Vegas for 2 weeks, traveled to the British Virgin Islands to run a clinic for a day and then back to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a camp for almost 2 weeks. My head is spinning as I walk off the plane into the airport to grab my luggage. It is midnight and I am ready to get some zzz’s. I have lots to do before I board my next International flight in less than 27 hours.
Ever since I have let go of my dreams and career and gave it all to God, my life has been so much more relaxed and spontaneous at the same time. Let me explain, I do not worry about if I am going to be successful by fulfilling my dreams, because whatever happens, I know I am doing God’s work and am where He wants me to be. Anytime He calls me to stay, I sit and if He calls me to go, I am outta here. So with this lifestyle, it is way more fun! I do keep working towards my long term goals, because Faith without Works is dead, but I have no worries and no expectations within it all. The only pursuit is building my relationship with Christ and serving His people. On my way to Oklahoma City, where my next flight flew out of, I pulled off the highway into a small town. “What a day to get my wallet stolen.” I thought as I shook my head. I had just finished calling the banks and cancelling my cards and was on my way to get a new drivers license. I always like going to smaller towns to get important things done, way less traffic and shorter lines. I figure it’s a good philosophy. I began to drive down Main Street and thought how quaint and quiet the little town was. It was so pretty. I parked a good ways from the tag agency so I could walk the downtown area a bit. It was great to take it all in and just breath before I had to move on. Sometimes you just have to slow down, go at your own pace and take in the fresh air. So that’s what I did. As I am refreshed, packed up and ready to go on my new adventure, I am excited, prayerful, and relaxed. I can’t wait to begin another journey in a new place. Pray for me and my travels as I am visiting a country I have not been to before. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences. Next stop China…. Their eyes kept jetting back and forth looking at the large building they were invited to. Not knowing where to go the athletes grabbed their bags and walked cautiously to the door. The agency who was helping with the logistics of the tournament met them in the lobby and took them to the table where they were able to sign in. "This is where it begins." They thought.
This team and many others were individually selected by the Jr. NBA coaches to showcase and represent their region or city at the NBA Academy in Greater Noida. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for many and also a chance for them to get selected for an even greater accomplishment, the global championship in the USA. During this week and a half at the NBA Academy the Jr. NBA National Tournament was happening along with the JR. NBA global championship tryouts and the NBA Academy tryouts. A whole lot of action and talent in a small time frame. For myself, this week was the grand finale of my trip in India. The Jr. NBA coaches were able to see all of our chosen players and coaches under one roof competing for a trophy and for a spot on the global team. Not only was this exciting, but the front office personnel, Jr. NBA coaches, NBA Academy coaches, agency staff and international guests were able to meet up in one spot. We were able to build relationships, talk life and discuss basketball. I was able to meet some great people that I will stay connected with for a long time. I could not hold the bat like I was supposed to. Swoooooosh! Clink! 'It hit the wicket, You LOSE!' those watching from outside the cage proclaimed. 'Who said that and what is a wicket?' I said to myself as I turned around with a snarling grin on my face. Cricket is obviously not my sport. People say it is similar to baseball, so I should be perfectly fine with it. Well, news to the bystanders, I never played baseball lol. I swung at the ball and hit it. Yes!!! Another ball was pitched. I swung, stumbled forward to my knees, but again, hit this one as well. I turned around as everyone was chuckling. 'I feel like I am hitting like a wimp,' I grinned, but actually was a bit ashamed on the inside. The guys agreed to my statement while videoing this new and embarrassing moment. I was having a lot of fun, but my competitive juices were definitely flowing. We were at the end party for the Jr. NBA coaches. Everyone was eating and dancing in one area and outside of that was a cricket batting cage that kept catching my eye. I just had to go and try it, professional clothes and all. A couple of others and I went out to play and had an exceptional time. By the end of the night, I had eaten, snacked, danced and played so much, I wished I would have worn my athletic shorts with the elastic band. That is how you know you had fun. Now that I am back from my trip, many ask if I am glad to be back. Of course, I am glad to be back home seeing family, friends and eating way too much of the food I wasn't able to get over there. But honestly, I loved what I was doing and enjoyed my time there. I was never in a rush to leave, I just lived each day to its fullest. No matter where you are in life or what you are doing, don't be in a rush to exit. Sometimes each place we go to is priming us for our next journey and adventure. Whether we are here or there, it's easy or tough, make a difference where you are. I am not sure what is in store for me next, but I am ready for whatever God has in His plans. *I want to give a special thanks to the ones who brought me to India as a JR. NBA Coach. To everyone in the office and on the courts, you have been such a blessing. I appreciate having the opportunity to work with you all. Thank you!* Tonight is my last night in Mumbai and I am going to miss it here. I will move to Greater Noida for the next 10 days to be at the National Championship. With all the scouting from these last 4 months, we are going to see our final product. We will be able to see the selected players and coaches once again at the place where it is held in the NBA Academy. For many of the players, this will be an experience of a lifetime. I am so happy for each and every person that is going to be in attendance.
I have been able to do a lot in these last couple of weeks. When I was in my last tryout city, I was able to visit the Victoria Memorial and attend my first cricket game. The Memorial was extremely beautiful and had much history intertwined in each structure, garden, statute, picture and piece at the museum. The cricket game was so much fun. I barely know how to play the sport, but I really enjoy watching anything competitive and all types of athletes. Knowing how much work goes into professional sports and how difficult it is to maintain your place on the team, is a work ethic and focus that I love to watch in the contenders. Each person is different in their competitiveness and athleticism and I enjoy seeing the mentality and physical aspect of each while the spotlight is on. The match was just like any other stadium during a big game; the fans were screaming, dancers were dancing and the announcer was hype. I was able to sit in a suite and the people that attended were entertaining and we all had great conversation. We were all mostly from different parts of the world, so getting to know each was intriguing. With a day off, I decided to go see a mall with a couple of friends that I have made from church. When I travel locally I love taking rickshaws. They are like 3 wheeled scooters with a roof. My favorite reason for riding in them is because of how they drive... dangerously lol. Here the traffic laws are just mere suggestions. The rickshaws go in and out of all the small crevices to get ahead of the cars in traffic, therefore they are a bit faster. So on my way to the mall, we hit a traffic jam, but that wasn't a big deal for us because we jumped up on the sidewalk and kept it moving lol. Here I have seen motorcycles on the sidewalks, but never a Rickshaw. I am proud to be apart of that first haha. Once we got to the mall we had lunch and I was able to shop around for things to bring back home; we had a great time. I will say they had a wax character in the main throughway made to look like Mr. Bean. It looked amazing other than it was the scariest Mr. Bean I have ever seen in my life, yikes lol. It has been great being in Mumbai and being able to make new friends and go on adventures that I might not get to do anywhere else. I try to cherish every moment God allows me to have. Each day is a new venture with challenges and journeys that allows God to mold us to become who we are. That mold changes each and every day, sometimes a little and sometimes a lot, everyone is different. When you mess up or when something terrible happens, just know that the pain is not the finished product. God is constantly working on us. Whatever our finished product looks like, just know we are God's beautiful work of art. So go out and take leaps of faith, try something new, go on an adventure, make a new friend, build on your life experiences, go fail and go succeed. I say the more the molds the better :) For the last month, I have been working out at a CrossFit gym. The trainers and people have been so much fun. Not only do we do our daily workouts, but we also have gone to a park to put in work, rock climbed and one weekend went cycling. There are also weekly dinners at the trainer's house where we are able to fellowship and hang out with each other, rather than just sweat around one another. I have really enjoyed getting stronger, back in shape and making new friends while in Mumbai. I have also been able to play some pick-up games while here at the local American School. I don't play much anymore because of old injuries, so now it is all recreational. I had so much fun the other day, just running up and down the court getting my cardio in lol and being competitive. The basketball lingo, trash talk and just plain conversation before and after the games were reminiscent and I had a great time engaging. Ironically I met a guy that played ball in Dallas for one of the teams I used to coach and he knows a lot of my old players and friends. What a small basketball world. With all the travel and working with others, it has been great to come back to a place where I am able to stay active, make good friends and build memories that I will never forget. My roommate and I have been able to visit a couple of schools this past week. Just like at any institution, when the students are attending their classes they see the same faces and have the same daily routine. When they notice us new people walking in the halls, the kids and teachers observe with unfamiliarity and curiosity, because they know that they might get a break or change in their schedule. At one school, we spoke on stage at an assembly to about 300 seventh grade girls. When speaking to them, I try to stay away from just talking about basketball. My biggest goal is to have fun with them and have a message that they won't forget involved in the experience. This involves bringing kids on stage, having them show us their talents, being interactive and expressing lots of energy, which if you know me at all, I have an abundance with lots to spare lol. At this particular school, a few girls came up and sang on the microphone. Once they got to the chorus, the entire auditorium erupted in sync (and ironically it was an American song by Ed Sheeran lol). We brought lots of kids up to the stage one by one and talked to them about their goals and hobbies. As an administrator was walking around the students with a mic, we were having them tell us what they wanted to be when they grew up. One wanted to be a pilot, another a doctor, another a lawyer and another an astronaut. These girls were well articulated and goal-driven. As we finished, we had everyone stand up to jump around in a dance party; we joined them in the chaos of moves that I am getting way too old to do lol. In the end, as the principal was closing the program, she said the biggest lesson that the girls learned was, 'Dream Big, Smile Always'. They wanted to pursue a career that allowed them to reach beyond their limitations and yet that they enjoyed. They knew it would take lots of work, but to never forget to keep smiling through the process. It made my day and I hope it made their day as well.
Tryouts for many of the cities have begun. They are for the top twenty boys and girls in that area that have been chosen from the skills challenges and tournaments. With only ten spots available for each, the athletes are competing to try and secure a spot to compete in nationals at the NBA Academy in Noida, India. It is exceptional to see their energy when they arrive and how they carry themselves throughout the event. They are working so hard to retain a position, but you also see the excitement on their faces just to be there. The jubilant reactions of the players when we announce that they have made it is so emotionally satisfying. Even though there are kids that do not make it, we reiterate that they are the best players in the city. Just the opportunity to participate against the top athletes in this selection process is something they will never forget. As one of the tryouts had ended, I passed by the swimming pool while I was leaving the hotel. I saw every kid out there playing in the water. They were having a great time conversing and splashing each other. I know it had to be a lot of pressure during the day to make the team, so I was extremely happy to see them having such a great time being able to relax and enjoy themselves. Being in Mumbai for the last two weeks has been relaxing and chaotic all in one. We had a record-breaking skills challenge of 1800+ kids followed by a six-day tournament, with a two-day tryout right after. In between all the basketball, I have been able to go to church, find a CrossFit gym, eat at some good restaurants, meet a lot of new people, do lots of walking and acquire the best farmers tan you have ever seen!
One of my favorite new friends is a guy who is only a couple of blocks away from my apartment. He has special needs and is in a wheelchair. His caretaker puts him on the same street corner almost every day from dusk until dawn with a tip jar connected to his chair. Every so often the guardian comes to collect the money that has been accumulated and presses it into his pocket. The man in the chair seems so happy sitting, smiling big, and swinging his arms uncontrollably at all the people passing by. Most people walk by and try not to see him, but he sees everyone with excitement and even lets out a squeal at times. The first time I saw him I was uncertain of what to do, not knowing if I should give him money, feel bad for his situation or be happy with him. I decided every time I pass by, I was going to acknowledge him and try to have a small goodie for him. A couple of days ago I brought him a candy bar and he let out the biggest yelp of joy while clapping his hands together. He spotted me yesterday and had a huge smile on his face as usual, and started waving eagerly. I went up to him to say hello and gave him an animated high five. I hope that when I see him I give him love, cheer, and good company. What he gives me is so much more and makes my heart smile. Every day I pray that I let God's light shine through me and for people to be encouraged by it. I see him and I can physically see what I am praying for. Each time I walk up to that busy corner, he gives me love, joy, and inspiration. There are lots of young street kids around that ask for money, for food or for you to buy the product they have in their hand. I had just finished my dinner at one of my usual places and two ran up asking for me to buy the small packages of tissues they held in their hands. I said no thank you, but they were insanely persistent. I am sure it can get exhausting always getting rejected, ignored or yelled at for peddling their things to others. I tend to think, as much as I do not like to be bothered by someone selling me goods, it has to be just as bothersome having a job that entails you to constantly be told no and shooed away. Instead of buying their merchandise, I started a conversation with them. At first, they were confused as to why I was talking to them, but I just kept chatting. They were about 10 years old and we began speaking in broken English about where we were on the street, what they liked, how old they were and so on. This lasted for about 15 minutes until my ride pulled up. A couple of days later I was at the same restaurant and one of the boys saw me. He ran up to me and instead of asking me to buy the tightly gripped tissues, he eagerly reached his hand out to shake mine with a playful grin. I squeezed him with a strong hug, told him he was one of the coolest kids I knew, made small talk and asked if I could take a selfie with him. He nodded his head with the most enthusiasm. It was so great to see him act his age rather than a laboring salesman on the street. No matter who we are, we all need someone. We need to be acknowledged, smiled at, encouraged or just have some love shown towards us. I urge everyone to selflessly be this person. Make a goal of showing an act of kindness towards someone every day. The best part about it is that when we think that we are reaching out to someone else, usually they are blessing us 🙂. I just returned to my apartment from traveling to eight distant cities in twenty-seven days. Before I left on my long trip, I had just settled into my new living arrangements and was only here long enough to unpack. Once I returned from my journey, I didn't realize that I do not exactly remember where I live in my building. A sweet lady stopped me in the lobby and as we were chatting she asked me what floor I lived on. Only remembering what my door looked like, I took a wild guess at the second (which turned out to be correct lol). After talking for a bit, I found my door, came into the apartment, threw everything I had on the floor and collapsed on my bed. It was so nice to be back! As I began to unpack, it was like I was a kid in a candy store, finding things that I forgot I had in my room and holding them up like they were something new. Initially, when I left, I was only scheduled to be out nine days, but because of changes, I was out a month, so having access to more than my light packing was amazing. Even though I was glad to get back and rest, I am extremely grateful that my plans were changed and I was able to encounter new places, with new people, with new experiences.
This time has gone by so quickly, and yet I am still on the move. I can honestly say that I am loving the fast-paced, constant travel, continually active atmosphere. It keeps me on my toes, sharp and ready. If you know anything about me, you would know that I have high energy, so this is a perfect blend for me to exert my ambition into something I truly enjoy. It was after a skills challenge we decided to go to the top of the mountains. While on the way, our driver told us about a beautiful waterfall on the other side, so of course, we opted to go see it. Along with the twists and turns, you could see the amazing view out before us (if you get motion sickness, you would not have made it through the first five minutes without getting nauseous). We would randomly stop for selfies and to take in the culture of the city below and the beauty of God's nature around us. My favorite part was the monkeys! They were everywhere, just hanging out and doing their own monkey thing. Once we got to the waterfall, we had to walk down lots of stairs to see it. The monkeys were all around, which I was loving, but was careful not to bring their attention to me, knowing that they outnumbered me if something went awry. The waterfall was a majestic site. It glistened in the sun and the sound of the water crashing below was harmonic. It was cold and the crisp air added to its beauty. Other than laughing at the intoxicated fellow who got in the below freezing water and took a selfie while standing underneath the waterfall, it was picturesque (Lol!). From the mountains to the monkeys, to the waterfall, I see God's beauty. He gives us life and puts us among his astonishing creations. As we continue in our normal, busy lives, pausing to see His works can allow us to capture His closeness every day. I have been in India for 2 weeks now and it has been extremely fast paced. After getting settled in my apartment in Mumbai, I have been traveling around the state of Kerala hosting coaches academies, skills challenges, clinics and tournaments. I want to take a moment to say how amazing these coaches, kids, parents, and staff members are. Everyone has such a kind heart and willingness to learn and to help. The athletes have come to these events looking to soak up all the information possible and ready to engage. In a place where the resources are limited and usually not the best of quality, everyone embraces the opportunity to learn, no matter what the circumstance.
Most of the courts are outdoors and while setting up for an event a few days ago, I looked over at a field close to us. There were about ten teenagers peering over the ledge at the back of a house where a dog was barking uncontrollably. I began to wonder what they were doing. I found out that while they were kicking their only ball around, it was accidentally pushed off the cliff and into someone’s backyard. At this house was an intimidating dog who was jumping and barking hysterically at the young men who were plotting ways to get there ball back without getting bit. They were discussing who the fastest person was and what their objectives were to retrieve the ball. They were on a mission, but you could tell it was something they enjoyed as they attempted to find a resolution. Sound like a familiar movie…. It was the live Indian version of the Sandlot. It was quite entertaining and I had a front row seat at the theatre. (Side note: I mentioned the classic American movie, ‘The Sandlot’ to the those working around me and they have never heard of it {gasp!}. I am thinking a movie night with s'mores is in our near future.) This makes me think about life in general; we can be so spoiled at times. Many of us have resources at our fingertips and sometimes don’t even realize it. When we are not allowed access to exactly what we want, we either go in a different direction or complain about the situation. What if we were the person that even though a hardship came into our lives, we would push through, keep a positive attitude and move forward. What if we worked at life without an expectation of material things. Instead we would work with a passion that says, I want this objective or destination bad enough that the lack of whatever I need is just a minor setback to my major comeback. It is like those teenagers with the ball in the backyard. It didn’t matter that there was a vicious dog in the way, they were determined to get their ball back so they could do what puts a smile on their faces. Unbeknownst to them, they were making a movie to inspire others around them without even knowing it. This is life: what happens to us, how we decide to respond and the way we influence those around us. We need to live our life with an infectious ambition for what we want to accomplish. It could be a simple task of performing a daily chore or going after that big dream we have always wanted to do, but it has never been the right time or circumstance. It might seem difficult at the time, but remember we are always inspiring or uninspiring those around us. In the end, who knows if you are actually able to achieve what you are fighting for, but you will always be able to say you did your best at living your life and that puts you in a pretty great place when all is said and done. We are making our own movie with live scenes being completed every day. Is your movie worth streaming online or checking out at Blockbuster (for all my old heads lol)? Remember it is never too late to have that amazing plot twist in the middle or at the end! What would be the title of your movie? What is the genre of your life? Is there a movie that best describes you or a movie you want to do describe you? I love you all! Remain Blessed :) |
